1 – CASA DA CRIANÇA (Children’s House)
Casa da Criança brings to life initiatives for the care of children and adolescents up to 17 years old. The organization has been working for 42 years with children whose basic needs were not met in their early days of existence, and who were often abandoned by their parents.
Currently, among the various projects, the organization serves approximately 200 vulnerable children. Among the actions that the institution performs with the children are sports, computer lessons, psychological assistance, cultural outings, music lessons, and English classes. In other words, the organization ensures that the children who are welcomed receive everything they need to develop fully.

Having the opportunity to be part of these children’s lives, even for a short time, can be a very enriching activity for both you as a volunteer and for them.
Being able to contribute, even with a small gesture, to the formation and growth of these children represents the possibility for them to look to the future with more hope and confidence.

2 – Sylvio Passarelli Institute (SPI)
The Sylvio Passarelli Institute works in the education of young people in situations of social vulnerability. The organization uses a pedagogical approach focused on the development of autonomy, knowledge, and dignity to elaborate its social projects.

With the goal of developing humanized education, the ISP offers the young project participants school reinforcement classes, theater classes, and cultural outings, where they can understand a little better the historical construction of the places where they live.
In addition, students also participate in sports activities such as football, capoeira, basketball, boxing, and ping pong.
One of the most interesting activities of the organization is the discussion circles.
In this activity, the young person is stimulated to think about topics that are relevant to the construction of critical thinking in an exchange environment between teachers, students, and the pedagogical team. It is in these moments that young people can even debate on topics considered taboo or that would not have an opening to talk to a responsible person or close relative.
The discussion circles end up being a moment where the young person can expose their views on a particular subject while welcoming and listening to different views on the same subject from other people.

3 – Arca Brasil
Founded in 1993, ARCA Brazil was created with the proposal of improving the relationship between humans and animals.
The NGO’s beginnings were marked by the episode of the dolphin Flipper, which was the last animal of its species to leave captivity and live freely in its natural habitat.
ARCA was responsible for the entire process of removing Flipper from captivity until its release.
In 1996, ARCA created the “ethical control program for dog and cat populations” with the aim of presenting a sustainable solution that addressed the problem of overpopulation of animals living on the streets.

The program was so successful that it was recognized by the PAN-AMERICAN Organization of Health for its pioneering work in Latin America. ARCA is also known for organizing mass castrations of domestic animals to reduce the chance of disease and to prevent the growth of the population of these animals on the streets.
Another noteworthy project of the organization is the Solidarity Veterinary Program, which creates a network of animal health professionals willing to attend cases where the responsible caretakers of the animals do not have the means to cover the total costs of treatment.
Animal protection and defense NGOs like Arca are very important when we consider the data on animal abandonment in Brazil: Brazil currently has over 170,000 abandoned animals under the care of some NGO.
The majority of these animal NGOs that provide shelter for animals are located in the Southeast region, followed by the South, Northeast, and North regions of the country.
The number of animals on the streets of Brazil without any type of assistance is estimated to be 30 million, according to estimates by the Pet Brazil Institute.
It is a huge number that requires attention from animal NGOs that are committed to the cause.
So, if you are looking for an animal protection and defense NGO to volunteer in São Paulo, Arca is certainly the one for you.
The open positions for Arca volunteers are in the communication area, assisting in the creation of programs to raise awareness among the population on sensitive animal welfare issues.
You can also work with animals housed in partner organizations of Arca and offer support, care, and even assistance to animals that are in a situation of shelter.
Last but not least, you can work as a responsible animal guardian advisor to animals that are about to be taken home by new owners.

4 – CRUZANDO HISTÓRIAS (Crossing Stories (CS))
The NGO Crossing Stories works on the gender equity cause, specifically on the reintegration of women into the job market through workshops, dynamics, and projects that promote emotional well-being for those in need.
Founded in 2018 in São Paulo, the NGO aims to provide a therapeutic and safe space for women who have lost their jobs to regain attributes such as confidence and self-esteem and feel more prepared during the selection process.
One of the organization’s main projects is EscutAção, which has a strong therapeutic-psychological component and uses nonviolent communication techniques, encouraging women to look at their unemployment stories from a new perspective.
The work consists of presenting the strengths and important lessons that the unemployment situation causes and that can be used to build a path towards professional repositioning.

Recently, the organization managed to finance the opening of a physical space. This is because, due to the pandemic and budgetary challenges, the organization was strongly focused on the digital realm.
CS HOUSE was inaugurated on March 8, 2022, on International Women’s Day. The space offers various activities for reintegrating women into the job market, psychological support, conversation circles, and much more.

5 – ADUS
The ADUS organization does important work in reintegrating refugees in Brazil.
Try the following empathy exercise: You left your home country due to a war, political instability, or any other negative event. You left your family behind because you could not afford to pay for the travel costs of your children and partner. When you said goodbye to your family, you promised to send money to help with household expenses or to bring them to Brazil.
You arrive in Brazil and do not know anyone, you do not understand the local dynamics well, and you are unemployed.
That is where Adus comes into the story of this immigrant. Adus provides free Portuguese classes, classes in other languages, and income-generating classes.
And of course, amidst all these activities, the organization also becomes a place of refuge for these people who, for various reasons, are struggling to improve their quality of life.
If you want to volunteer in São Paulo, working on the refugee cause, Adus is for you. You can teach English or another language, work on creating income-generating workshops, and participate in the other activities that take place in the organization.

Considering the importance of this type of social organization in our country, it is important to better understand who these immigrants are and which nationalities see Brazil as a destination country when they are forced to leave their country of birth.
Currently, the largest number of immigrants in Brazil comes from Haiti, a former Portuguese colony, followed by Venezuela and Bolivia.
Another significant data point is that in 2019 and 2020, Brazil welcomed more refugees than in all the previous years combined.
